Are mobile phones dangerous? This is a question that will get an answer NO. Mobile phones are something that we carry everywhere we go; school, work, and even to the loo. In today’s world, there are very few people who do not have mobile phones. Everyone these days carries a big, smartphone and this has become more like a style quotient. The bigger the phone, the better your status is. It has even become a priority in our lives. As soon as we wake up, instead of wishing our family a good morning, we send GIFs and memes over WhatsApp. So, we can say that in today’s world mobile phones have completely changed the life of an individual.
However, the access of everything is bad and like every other thing mobile phone has two sides; good and bad. Undoubtedly, it is a wonderful invention that you have everything you need at the tips of your fingers but sometimes it is worse than you could ever think. Below is an elaborated article to find out are cell phones our best friend or our master?
When you think about it, it has its own advantages and disadvantages. Below are some pointers that can help you to think clearly.
Advantages
To start with, let us discuss the goods that this electronic device brings with it.
Easy communication
Of course, communication has become so much easier ever since smartphones have come into existence. Just by pressing some keys on your phone, you can connect with a person whom you have not seen for months. With the video calling features available on almost every platform, you can video chat with anyone you want. No wonder, this is one of the best uses of cell phones.
Social media
Phones help you to stay connected with the outer world. Smartphones are more of a gift to social media lovers. They help you to know what is happening around the world. More than the news, people get all sorts of information from platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and more. Also, it is a great place to know what your friends have been up to. So, yes, smartphones are a blessing for all those who love social media.
Education
With the technology getting advanced each day, knowledge or information can also be searched online. In fact, many schools and colleges are offering online classes to their students so that they can learn from the convenience of their houses. The study material is provided in the form of images, photos, texts, pdf, etc. So, cells phones have become an integral part of everyone’s life.
But these are the pros that we want to see and keep using smartphones normally. What we don’t think is the cons that it brings with itself.
Disadvantages
Identity theft
These days, our phones carry each and every piece of information that we would not want to share with anyone. That information includes our debit and credit card information, our passwords, bank details, and whatnot. So, if someone steals our phones, he might have access to all these things. Apart from that, we also have our documents like Aadhar card, PAN card, and voter ID card saved on our cells and so if it gets stolen our identity is stolen.
Distraction
Since we all have become the puppets of our own cell phones, it would not be inappropriate to call them distractions. No matter how late you are getting to reach somewhere or how much you have on your plate you find time to scroll through social media for an hour or so. This is one of the worst things about a cell phone that it creates distractions. Even the kids today are fond of mobiles and they skip their homework and push their studies for the latter.
Distance from loved ones
As much as we disagree with the fact that phones create a gap between us and our loved ones. We are so committed to that piece of machinery that we don’t want to see the worth of people who are with us. These days everyone is busy improving their relationship with the person they met online but what we forget is we have some duties towards our friends and family too. Talking to someone face-to-face has become so difficult. I have seen people calling their family members even if they are in the house. This is what technology is doing to us.
Cell phones used to be our best friends now they are becoming more of our masters. There isn’t a single hour in a day that we spend without our phones. Even the children are getting addicted to them these days. Everyone is so busy capturing the moments, no one thinks to actually live them. Technology and mobile phones are the reason we live a fake life. To compete, we go to expensive places, buy expensive things and show off a life that we never live.
There is no doubt in the fact that advanced technology has improved communications; emergency calls, getting to see the ones who live far away from us, and whatnot. But misuse of the technology can be bad at times. The question we gotta ask to ourselves; what makes our electronic tools so compelling? They buzz, they vibrate, and the freedom to face time, call anyone we want. All these things have made us addicted to our phones.
I guess for many of us our phones have conditioned us. They are no longer a tool but a relationship. Even when we are not on a call, we are on WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. We spend hours gazing at our phone screens not even worrying about the time. Many people even sleep with their cell phones and are more comfortable texting than meeting someone to have a real conversation. Is it normal? Is it appropriate? The more I think about it, the more I get confused. When did we become a slave to our own phones?
Moreover, what I feel is mobile phones are creating a gap between us and the people we live with. We prioritize our phones more than anything else in the world. No matter where we are; traveling, a social gathering, or even a friend’s get-together, we are always on our phones. We cannot live without our phones even for a day. It is more like our heads remain hung towards the mobile phones just like a t-shirt hung on a hanger.
There is no point in denying the fact that smartphones have become an inseparable part of everyone’s lives. That completely depends on us whether to embrace the benefits or to misuse them. I think there should be a usage limitation so that you know when you are over-using it. Maybe, you don’t use your phone while sitting with your family having dinner, or take it with you to the bed and sleep as soon as your head hits the bed, or maybe you don’t carry it with you to the bathroom.
Well, we have a tiny computer with us all the time but that does not mean we cannot limit the time we use it. Nothing has a bad impact on us as long as we use it as a tool and tools do not distract us. In fact, we use them and keep them at their respective places. Now it depends on us, mobile phones can be both; our best friends and our masters. Do not let them the latter and use it to an extent that it does not make you addicted. After all, mobile phones were made to change our lives in a positive way.
